The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) division held a one-day seminar on responsible and sustainable aquaculture in Srikakulam, North Andhra Pradesh, India, on Aug. 10.

2014-08-10-10-58-57The seminar was held in association with the Dhanlakshmipuram Farmers’ Association.

This was the first seminar on responsible and sustainable aquaculture held by the BAP management team in North Andhra Pradesh, intended to spread awareness among the region’s shrimp farmers.

The seminar highlighted the BAP third-party certification program, with specific information on regulation, social and environmental compliance, food safety, traceability and animal welfare, as it related to shrimp farming.

About 40 farmers — originating from big corporate farms as well as medium- and small-scale farms — attended the seminar. BAP Program Integrity Manager Murali Krishna Bujji taught the seminar.

“The farmers were very eager to learn about BAP certification,” he said, adding that a few of the farmers are looking to pursue BAP certification by year’s end.

The BAP management team regularly conducts such outreach on responsible and sustainable aquaculture, recently holding a seminar in Can Tho, Vietnam, that drew more than 90 participants.
